Der Reflextaster arbeitet mit Rotlicht nach dem energetischen Prinzip und eignet sich, um Objekte ohne Hintergrund zu erkennen. Der Schaltabstand wird auf ein Objekt eingestellt. Dabei gilt: Helle Objekte reflektieren das Licht besser als dunkle. Dadurch können auch dunkle (matte) von hellen (glänzenden) Objekten unterschieden werden. Damit lassen sich z. B. Anwesenheits- oder Stapelhöhenkontrollen durchführen oder Zählaufgaben realisieren. Die IO-Link-Schnittstelle kann für die Einstellung des Reflextasters (PNP/NPN, Öffner/Schließer, Schaltabstand) und für die Ausgabe der Schaltzustände und Abstandswerte verwendet werden.
